Calendula officinalis is a member of the Asteraceae plant family. It is most commonly referred to as the pot marigold or common marigold. Noted for their vibrant yellow-orange hue, calendula petals are edible and are prized by chefs as an alternative to saffron. Calendula extracts produced by infusion and maceration methods have been used since the 16th century to soothe a wide array of skin-related concerns.

Our premium quality Organic Calendula CO2 Total Extract is obtained by pressurized supercritical fluid extraction using carbon dioxide as the solvent. This method effectively extracts all the beneficial lipophilic constituents present in the calendula flowers. Once the extraction process is complete, the CO2 dissipates back into a gaseous state, and the extract is then carefully filtered. A maximum 0.1% Organic Rosmarinus Officinalis (Rosemary) Extract has been added to ensure stable shelf life.

Most calendula extracts are produced by macerating calendula petals into a vegetable oil base such as sunflower or olive. Although traditional Calendula Extract offers significant advantages within skin care applications, our Organic Calendula CO2 Total is more concentrated and offers a greater composition of phytosterols and other beneficial lipophilic compounds that are naturally present in the calendula petals. Additionally the CO2 supercritical extraction process exposes the extract to far less heat during production, leading to a reduced risk of oxidation and a much more prolonged and stable shelf.

The main constituents of the extract include faradiol esters, carotenoids, sterols (sitosterol) and cuticular waxes. Organic Calendula CO2 Total Extract features a characteristic sweet, woody calendula aroma, dark brown hue and is typically semi-soft and waxy at room temperature.
