Polysorbate 20Polysorbate 20 is a non-ionic surfactant that acts as a gentle, non irritating emulsifier. It is used to emulsify oils in water and can be used in body or room sprays, creams, lotions, dispersing bath oils and other formulations. It is highly recommended for emulsifying essential oils as it preserves the integrity and properties of the oil. While Polysorbate 20 is one of the gentlest polysorbate emulsifiers, it is not the most effective emulsifier. Some separation in toners, mists, linen sprays and water soluble bath oils is common. These products quickly re-emulsify when shaken. To make sprays, start by mixing equal amounts of Polysorbate 20 to fragrance or essential oil (1:1). Let the mixture rest. If it is not clear, you can try adding a little more polysorbate 20. Adding vodka to the solution will also help clear it up. Add your fragrance solution to your water. Then add your vodka and shake. Vodka will also help act as a preservative. |
