Typically known as East Indian Sandalwood, Santalum album is the most revered and prized species of Sandalwood due to the beautifully exquisite aroma of its heartwood and its historical significance in perfumery. It belongs to the Santalaceau plant family. The heartwood is thought to be one of the first aromatics used by mankind. Known for its deep, sultry aroma, the heartwood and its essential oil have been used throughout history for its spiritual, emotional, therapeutic and fragrancing applications.
Our premium quality Indian Sandalwood CO2 Select Extract is obtained by pressurized supercritical fluid extraction using carbon dioxide as the solvent. This method effectively extracts the beneficial lipophilic constituents present in the aromatic heartwood. The CO2 supercritical extraction process is superior to steam distillation because it exposes the extract to far less heat during production than hydro or steam distillation, leading to a reduced risk of oxidation and a much more prolonged and stable shelf life. Once the extraction process is complete, the CO2 dissipates back into a gaseous state. Unlike hexane and other solvent extraction processes, no trace of solvent remains in extracts produced by CO2 supercritical extraction methods.
Ethical and Sustainable Sourcing:
Due to its immense desirability, Indian Sandalwood had been excessively harvested to the point that it was at critical risk of endangerment. To combat the significant threat to these magnificent trees, the Indian government oversees the sale of all sandalwood. The heartwood used in the production of our Sandalwood CO2 Select Extract are all from Santalum album trees that are 60-100 years old and that have fallen naturally. Our manufacturing partner sources sandalwood heartwood that has been sustainably cultivated and legally purchased.
